PRESIDENT'S 2ND QUARTER REPORT 2008 15 August 08 Fellow Urologists,
Greetings! Our Midyear Convention in Davao last April 10 – 12, 2008 was a success. All in all 156 members and 55 Residents in training with their families flocked to Davao. The sidetrips to scenic spots in the City, the excursion to Pearl Farm and Samal Island, Davao Cuisine, golf and games were welcome respite from the hectic grieved. These were capped by pasalubongs of Durian and Pomelo. My commendations to the organizing committee headed by Dr. Telesforo E. Gana, Jr. with Dr. Ernesto L. Gerial, Jr., Dr. Stephen M. Nazareth, Dr. Rufino T. Agudera and Dr. Silverio A. Salileng as members. Their dedication and commitment to work for PUA was equally watched by the Mindanao Chapter with Dr. Manuel S. Belisario as chair and Herman L. Sorongon, Dr. Julius de la Victoria, Dr. Pavio Buac, Dr. Tatad Ho Kalbit, Dr. Manuel Mondero, Dr. Gregorio Cordovez, Dr. Mark Benignos, Dr. Manuel Gerry Sevilla, Dr. Joni Gaw, as members. Bigger success is our earnings for that affair. With all the collectibles we got Php 1, 038.170.00 Happiest is the Mindanao Chapter for they retain the 40% of that. Unknown to many, the Outreach Committee headed by Dr. Hector A. Jacinto and Dr. Clayton F. Blas, we went ahead 2 days before the Midyear to conduct an Outreach Mission in Tagum City, Davao. The group composed of Dr. Chris Taguba, Dr. Irene Descargar and Dr. Juvido Agatep did DRE/consultations patients, and performed 7 major urological operations. Dr. Manuel Gerard L. Sevilla warmly received the team and coordinated with the Davao Regional Hospital and the local medical society, for the cases. The PUA did not rest after that. Last June 13, 2008 the Executive Council convened in Iloilo City, for a meeting and Dialogue with Ilonggo Urologists. This activity was timed with the Father’s Day, Annual DRE, and Outreach Mission. The outreach team was warmly welcomed by Dr. Glenn Maclang and his loving wife Dr. Gina Maclang. Aside from the team in Tagum, Dra. Monette Bragais and Dr. Raul Winston Andutan came, who collected the urological cases and coordinated with the Western Visayas Medical Center. They performed 6 urological operations including 2 hypospadias which lo and behold, did not complicate fistulas, at least during our stay there. The Council was warmly received by Dr. Romeo Reyes who traveled all the way from Bacolod to lecture on BPH. Dr. Glenn Maclang, Dr. Alejandro Rivera, Dr. Victor Acepcion, Dr. Tony Reyes, Dr. Raul Sancho, Dr. Pete Tingson and Dr. Dick Arcenas aired problems, their concerns were heard and the group was encouraged to form their own chapter. Dr. Alejandro Emmanuel Rivera acted as EMCEE in the Scientific Session. Other attendees were from local PMA and PCS Chapters. CONTINUATION.... ARIEL A. 26 March 2008 Dear PUA Members, Greetings! I would like to update you on the actions taken by your Executive Council during the first quarter of 2008. Last February 18, 2008, The PSUO had its first scientific meeting with Dr. Lawrence Klotz, Chairman of the World Uro-Oncology Federation as speaker, sponsored by Astrazeneca Philippines. I took this opportunity of cooperating with the PSUO purely because of the expertise and credentials of the speaker. More so because the topic was relevant: “Updates on Prostate Cancer Management”. That same day Astrazeneca sent us a letter of reconsideration regarding their status. As early as October 2007, The Executive Council has ruled that the ASTRAZENECA ban will be in effect till the end of December 2007. In the meeting that night the council formally rescinded Astra’s ban. So now, Astrazeneca is back in the mainstream of Pharmas that have the honor to participate in PUA activities.
Last January 7, 2008 The Council resolved to merge the PHC & the Outreach Committee and incorporate the activities of the former with the latter
Dr. Jacinto was the appointed chairman of the expanded outreach and Dr. Andutan as executive council adviser. He had the marching order to reach out and involve former PHC members as area coordinators. The resolution to merge was in terms of manpower and to maximize the urological services to urologist less areas. The mechanism was to be discussed in the Admin Manual preparation.
Dr. Gerial, The Chairman of the Scientific Committee informed the Council that the East Asia Endo-Uro Society invited the Philippines to host the 2009 congress in Manila. Details of this are being prepared by Dr. Gerial. As a wise prerequisite he recommended the organization of the Endo-Uro Lap Society in the Philippines which the council approved. He is in the process of organizing this now.
Last February 9, 2008, The Admin Manual workshop was conducted at Dusit Hotel, participated in by the Council members and committee chairmen. It wil be presented in the midyear meeting by Dr. Joey Campana. Talking of the midyear, preparations are going in high gear and Dr. Nazareth has prepared a new scheme for the fellowship night. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE (4TH QUARTER ) In behalf of the 2007 Executive Council, may I have the honor of thanking you for all the support you have given us in the past year. As a rejoinder, the last quarter of the year was spent deep in preparation for the 50th Golden Anniversary Convention and I daresay, despite the small hitches, there were no major drawbacks. But if the Manila Pen coup happened at the Shang, that would have been the end of our convention! Despite the so-so attendance from our ASIAN and ASEAN neighbors, we are most thankful for those who had attended most especially the delegates from India, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. The presence of the UAA was felt too. From the small talk that we had overheard, our speakers were impressed by the quality of the discussions during the plenary sessions which far "exceeded expectations". Apparently, they came way with better academic reviews of the Philippine Urologists than our ASEAN or ASIAN counterparts. Some of them have signified their intention that they would be open for more speaking engagements here. Of note was Dr. Ralph Clayman, who took time to visit Corregidor to see where his father was "incarcerated" during World War II. Dr. Arthur Smith and wife took to the Tiangge at Greenhills then went to Boracay and Palawan and Tagaytay c/o host Joel Aldana. My main thrust, this year, was to "advertise" the urologists all over the country. This started with the Presidential Decree declaring 2007 as the year of the Filipino Urologist. Advertising the urologist and what we do and can do were what the radio programs and tv programs were designed for. The "Itanong Mo sa Urologist" on PTV 4 every month and the "Urologist on the Air" on DZAR were geared to discussions of Urologic Disease Awareness. The radically revamped PUA website include articles on the diseases that could be read by the public and they could then query any urologists online by email. The find a urologist nd ask a urologist were designed to make the urologist more accessible by the public (if he so desires) So make use of this facility. Lastly, the PUA Foundation and MSD Resource Center offers the urologists the change to search for any article, send the request to MSD and have the full text article in 2 days. Again, you have to log into the PUA website for this. In 2008 let's support Ariel A. Zerrudo and the Executive Council in their endeavors. Merry Christmas to one and all!
THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ON THE EVE OF THE PUA'S 50th ANNUAL CONVENTION " THE NEXT DAY IS NOT AN END " On the occasion of the 50th year of the PUA and at the stroke of midnight of December 31, 2007, I would mark the end of my term as President of the PUA. Sometimes I ask myself, what had been accomplished in the past year and what more should be done and what is really needed by the PUA? I sincerely believe that the PUA membership is growing by leaps and bounds and the danger of a superficial veneer of members’ camaraderie is highly probable given the natural tendency of gravitation towards persons who share the same experiences. It is inevitable and it is natural for “birds of the same species to flock together”. The impetus of the organization now is to provide avenues by which growth of the organization is sustainable and positive, despite the diversity of institutions that produce the urologists who would later be members and then govern the organization.
What is required now is for a membership that looks out for the interests of the others, regardless of school or institution, and for a leadership to provide the example of loyalty to the PUA first, and their institution, second, thus ensuring that the PUA would be above and beyond the fray of bickering and politics. It goes without saying that the leadership of the PUA should look after the interests of the PUA but to do so would require a dissociation with an individual’s institution and an immersion into a collective that is known as the PUA. Interesting, isn’t it but as this year ends, tomorrow opens a new horizon for the PUA and it is my belief that strengthening the ties that bind and maintaining communications between the PUA, as an organization, and its members is a definite priority. For it is the very reason that the members’ pride in the PUA would make them feel part of and belong to the PUA and as such would, as a member, strive to maintain the feeling of collectivity and belongingness that is very essential to an organization’s growth. For as long as the members experience that sense of pride and satisfaction in “owning” a part of PUA, they would strive to defend and look after her and make her grow ( for the next 50 years ). For the future leaders of the PUA, my advice to you is to care for all, listen to all and serve all. In that way you serve the interests of the PUA, Inc. Merry Christmas to one and all. Juliano Z. K. Panganiban, MD President 2007 PUA
QUARTERLY PRESIDENT’S REPORT ( 3rd Quarter) The last 3 months have been exciting for the Association. As part of using the age of digital technology and internet access for the benefit of the members, the PUA Website is now a portal by which the PUA members could enter the PUA Foundation-MSD Merck Resource Center link to be able to search for a particular urology article, request for it from the extensive MRC Library and receive the full text article on their e-mails! (all without having to go to the MRCs ). However, you will have to log on to the PUA Website (www.puanet.org.ph) and go to the eLibrary Services link. Call the PUA Secretariat if you forgot your username and password. Finally after 3 years of planning, next month’s annual convention would feature a lot of foreign guest speakers that are doing justice to the efforts of the Scientific Committee under Dr. Jason Letran. They have labored long and hard to bring to us a convention that it up to par with world standards with regards the delivery of a good mix of urologic topics. Dr. Mela Lapitan, who is the project coordinator for the PBU Registry Project has reported that the NKTI has successfully test-run the soft ware and JR would be the next institution to do so. PUA PRESIDENT’S REPORT ( Please log in and proceed to your member page to view the rest of the details )
THE PUA FOUNDATION AND MSD LAUNCH DESKTOP MRC! Now the PUA members can receive complete urologic articles from the comfort of their desktops or laptops through the efforts of the PUA Foundation and the MSD Merck Resource Center. A MOA was signed last September 27, 2007,which would last for a year, that would enable all the PUA members to log on to the PUAF – MSD page within the PUA Website. This link, developed by Dr. Mon Torres and our IT consultant, Martian Yoingco and approved by the PUA, PUA Foundation and MSD, will allow the PUA members to search for any urologic article, request it from MSD and have the article sent to his e-mail address. This brings the MSD Resource Center right to the members’ offices or homes (without having to go to the nearest MRC through all the traffic). All you need is your desktop or laptop, an internet connection and your username and password to your webpage within the PUA Website (www.puanet.org.ph). If you don’t have this yet, please call the Secretariat and ask for your username and password.

PUA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “ PUA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “ ( 1st quarter ) Greetings! 2007 is the year the Philippine Urological Association, Inc. celebrates its 50th anniversary and it is befitting that the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Ms. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has declared, through Presidential Proclamation No. 1218 dated this January 15, that 2007 be the “Year of the Filipino Urologists”. It is an honor for the Filipino Urologists to receive such a tribute as we believe that our mission to promote disease awareness and deliver urologic services, over the years, have been brought to the fore with such a recognition. We have updated and improved our PUA website to add to its value as an seamless forum between the public and the Filipino Urologists. Hence, persons seeking a Filipino Urologist or urologic advice would realize that any PUA member, who would so desire, would be within reach. We have the “Find a Urologist” page so that anyone can seek a Philippine based urologist by hospital, city, municipality or region. Whether the person seeks the urologist by name or by hospital or by city or by region, the urologist would just be a few clicks away. The “Ask a Urologist“ page is an avenue by which a patient can seek advice regarding a certain urologic condition. Mind you, this is not an avenue by which people can seek consultations as the PUA is placing a disclaimer on any and all advice emanating from Filipino urologists contacted through and communicated with through its website. This is being done to protect the urologist, the public and the PUA from any medical or legal situations that arise from such advice-seeking sessions. The Filipino urologists, answering such queries, have independently decided to offer their advice to the public. We have a Urologic Disease Awareness Program that is hoped to increase the level of awareness of the public. Please click on the respective subjects to the left of this message and read through its contents. The readers may find explanations to the various common urologic diseases. Aside from this, these topics will be broadcast through radio DZAR “ Clinic on the Air” on a Sunday afternoon each month with a urologist expounding on the topic of the month. Simultaneously, on the last Tuesday of each month, between 7 – 9 am, on PTV 4’s Good Morning Show, a segment named “ Itanong mo sa Urologist, alam niya” featuring a urologist, will be aired live with a urologic disease discussed. Lastly, the Daily Inquirer had been approached to publish a topic every month till November. At the end of the year, the Philippine Urological Association, Inc. will celebrate its Golden Anniversary Annual Convention from November 28 till December 1, 2007. We are proud to announce that we will be hosting, simultaneously, the Asia Pacific Society of Urologic Oncologists General Assembly and the Federation of ASEAN Urological Associations Annual Meeting. This will be a proud and honorable time for the PUA, Inc. Knowledge and understanding through education and surgical services to the urologist-less areas for the Filipinos are what the members of the Philippine Urological Association aim to achieve. Juliano Z. K. Panganiban, MD President
